Essex Middle River Veterinary Center is a full-service companion animal hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  It is our mission to provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your pet, in a professional manner, with deep respect for the human-animal bond.

We are proud to have served the greater Baltimore area for over 50 years. Our legacy derives from our commitment to the well-being of our patients and the concerns of our clients.

Formerly known as Essex Dog & Cat Hospital, the Essex Middle River Veterinary Center changed its name in 2007 to better reflect our comprehensive approach to medicine, state of the art hospital, and new geographic location between Essex and Middle River.

  • Dr. Joseph C. Zulty

    Dr. Zulty, Chief Medical Officer of Essex Middle River Veterinary Center was born and raised in Baltimore.  He performed his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County earning a Bachelor's degree in molecular biology.  He received his DVM degree, graduating Cum Laude, from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He ultimately completed a residency in comparative medicine at the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Medicine.

    He shares his home with his wife, his youngest child and two dogs, Scout, and Puma - the three-legged dog from Peru. When not at work he's running the road and trails locally, snowboarding, or volunteering in Latin America or Southeast Asia with GeoVeterinary International, Inc. (www.geovets.org).

  • Dr. Anne Hicks

    Dr. Hicks is from Cambridge, Maryland.  She attended Western Maryland College earning a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. She received her DVM from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia.  

    She shares her home with her husband and two children. They have a Westie, Coco; one cat, Mr. K and a puppy, Milo.

  • Dr. Ryan Ashkon Beizavi

    Dr. Beizavi grew up in upstate New York in the finger lakes region. He graduated from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY, in 2007 with a B.A. degree in Biology. He then attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, finishing his final clinical year at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. His interests include diagnostic imaging, geriatric care, and dermatology. 

    Dr. Beizavi has one cat and two dogs. He spends his free time working out, golfing, kayaking and playing online games with friends.

  • Dr. Heather Preston

    Dr. Preston is originally from Anne Arundel County. She graduated from University of Maryland College Park with a bachelors degree in Animal Science. She then received her DVM degree from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her professional interests include feline medicine, dentistry, and surgery.

    Dr. Preston spends her free time enjoying city life, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and doing yoga.  She has two cats named Penguin and Pigeon.

  • Dr. Shawn Budge

    Dr. Budge was born and raised in Carroll County, Maryland. he graduated from Salisbury University with a  Bachelor's degree in philosophy and later completed additional coursework at the University of Maryland, College Park. he received his DVM degree from Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. His professional interests include pathology, surgery and neurology. 
    Dr. Budge and his wife enjoy running together, traveling the world, spending time with friends and family and cooking at home. He has two dogs, a black and white rescue called Winston (seen in photo) and a golden-doodle called Bailey.
